Acer Monspessulanum is commonly known as Montpellier Maple. This medium-sized deciduous tree is native to the Mediterranean region. It was first discovered in the south of France, 'Mons pessulanus' being the Latin name for the French city of Montpellier. The stem is dark grey and becomes lightly grooved when it matures. The small leaf is shiny dark green. In autumn it turns yellow. It grows up to 50 feet high. However, Montpellier Maple tree is popular among bonsai enthusiasts. Hardiness zone: 5 Soil pH requirements: 5.6 to 6.0 (acidic) 6.1 to 6.5 (mildly acidic)

Germination - Soak seed in water for 48 hours
- Mix with humid sieved peat and sharp sand (do not get the medium too wet or seed will rot).

The conditions can be given artificially by using a warm room and refrigerator.

Dry seed has even more germination if kept for 2 weeks at 18-20ø C.

Mix the seed twice a week in the bag to allow fresh air to enter and the seed to breathe.
