Abelmoschus moschatus
Abelmoschus Moschatus, also known as ambrette seeds, musk mallow, annual hibiscus, Hibiscus Abelmoschus, Bamia Moschata, Galu Gasturi, muskdana, musk okra, is an aromatic and medicinal plant native to India, southern China, tropical Asia and some Pacific Islands. The plant occurs across coastal areas of northern Australia and along the east coast to South Stradbroke Island. Despite its tropical origin, the plant is frost-hardy and tolerates temperatures down to about -5øc. Abelmoschus Moschatus can grow up to 1.5m tall. Leaves are alternate, rough, hairy and heart-shaped. They have 3 to 5 lobes and can grow to 15cm long. In cultivation, two varieties are recognised with the flower with the white or yellow with a red or maroon centre or deep pink to red. They last for only one day and their flowering depends on the timing of the wet season. Seeds are contained within hairy capsules up to 8cm long. A sweet and delicate musk-like odour is produced by the seed coat. The essential oil obtained from the plant is used as a food flavouring and in perfumery as a musk substitute. Young leaves and shoots can be eaten cooked in soups. The leaves are also used to clarify sugar. Unripe seedpods can be eaten cooked as a vegetable in much the same way as okra. Seed can be eaten cooked. It is fried or roasted and has a flavour similar to sesame seeds. Abelmoschus Moschatus easily grows in moist, moderately fertile, well-drained soils and in full sun. The plant thrives in hot summer climates. Hardiness zone : 8-11
