Chorisia speciosa, now classified as Ceiba speciosa and commonly known as the Silk Floss Tree, is a spectacular deciduous tree native to South America. It is highly valued for its striking pink flowers, spiny trunk, and rapid growth, making it an eye-catching addition to warm-climate landscapes.
This tree can reach heights of 9 to 18 meters (30 to 60 feet) with a broad, spreading canopy. One of its most distinctive features is its green, bottle-shaped trunk covered in sharp, conical spines. These spines serve as protection against herbivores and help store water, making the tree well-adapted to drought conditions.
In late summer to fall, Chorisia speciosa produces large, hibiscus-like flowers in shades of pink, with a creamy white or yellowish throat. These blooms attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. After flowering, the tree develops large, woody seed pods filled with silky, cotton-like fibers, which aid in seed dispersal and give the tree its common name, Silk Floss Tree.
Thriving in USDA zones 9-11, Chorisia speciosa prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods. This tree is an excellent choice for ornamental landscaping, city parks, and large gardens where its unique trunk and vibrant flowers can be fully appreciated.
With its stunning floral display, spiny trunk, and ability to withstand challenging conditions, Chorisia speciosa is a truly remarkable tree that adds both beauty and resilience to warm-climate landscapes.
