Pachypodium horombense is a striking succulent native to Madagascar, known for its distinctive swollen trunk and spiny appearance. This species is a member of the Apocynaceae family and is often sought after by collectors due to its unique morphology and ornamental value.
Typically growing to a height of 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet), Pachypodium horombense has a thick, caudiciform trunk that stores water, making it highly drought-tolerant. The plant features long, narrow leaves that emerge at the top of the trunk in a rosette pattern. Its most notable characteristic is the presence of sharp spines along its trunk, which serve as a defense mechanism in its native environment.
In the spring and summer, Pachypodium horombense produces large, funnel-shaped, white or cream-colored flowers with a subtle fragrance. These blooms are followed by small, pod-like fruits that release seeds in the wild. Its flowers attract pollinators such as bees and moths.
This hardy succulent thrives in well-drained, sandy soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is highly tolerant of heat and dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, or container gardening. Pachypodium horombense should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root
