Ravenea Rivularis
Ravenea rivularis is also called Majestic palm and is part of the Arecaceae family. Ravenea rivularis comes from Madagascar, where it grows along river banks. Is becoming a very popular palm, but few people are aware of just how large this palm can get. This evergreen grows up to 40ft. or 12m. A very large (massive), solitary palm, with a large, untidy crown. Needs to be spaced by 6-8ft. Stately single trunk, 12 inches in diameter (30 cm) or more, non-crown shafted palm with a large full head. The palm symmetrical form and smooth, swollen at the base trunk, combine to create a living sculpture for the landscape. For the same reason, the Majesty palm has become a popular plant for indoors as well. This is a beautiful feather-leafed, with fronds pinnate 2-5 m long, often twisted and irregularly arranged. During summer an inflorescence will develop, followed by orange to red fruits. Hardiness Zones: 9-11, (-5øC/25øF, 4øC/40øF) in winter. This palm is not frost tolerant. The Majesty palm will grow in bright sunny areas but tends to look better in partly shaded areas. Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between watering. Also likes a yearly dose of Epsom Salts, because its not very efficient at taking up magnesium. If it does not get enough magnesium, the leaves take on a rather unhealthy yellow color. It is imperative to have good drainage. Even if this palm needs a lot of water it does poorly right on the ocean. Fertilized every 3 months.
