Sabal minor, commonly known as Dwarf Palmetto, is one of the hardiest palm species native to the southeastern United States. This compact, fan-leaved palm is prized for its cold tolerance and ability to thrive in a wide range of conditions, from wetlands to dry uplands.
Unlike many palms, Sabal minor typically has a subterranean or very short trunk, with large, blue-green fan-shaped leaves emerging directly from the ground. It adds a bold tropical look to landscapes, even in regions with occasional frost and snow.
In late spring to summer, it produces small creamy-white flowers on tall stalks that rise above the foliage, followed by black fruits that attract wildlife. Extremely low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established, it is an ideal choice for native plant gardens, woodland edges, or as a structural accent in mixed borders.
