Tectona Grandis
Tectona grandis (teak) is a tall tree from southeast Asia. It is cultivated for its durable wood and has also been used for traditional medicine in southeast Asia. This tree can reach up to 40 m. Its leaves are 6 ? 75 cm long, 8 - 45 cm wide. T. grandis will survive and grow under a wide range of climatic conditions but grows best in a warm, tropical climate with a temperature above 22 §C. Teak prefers well-drained, fertile soils and is a strong light demander. The species is hermaphroditic and pollinated by insects, especially bees. When seeds are sown in a mix of sand and coir, at 22 to 25§C, germination will take place within two to four weeks. The germination rate is low, and teak seedlings need shading.

Genus Tectona
Species Tectona grandis
Germination To reduce bulk in storage, the seed can be husked by rubbing it over a sieve. Another method is to load seed and large river gravel into a cement mixer.

The seed can then be ?floated? off. Stumps, used for propagation, can be stored for up to a year. Seed storage behaviour is orthodox.

Viability can be maintained for at least 7 years in hermetic, air-dry storage at room temperature.
