Tectona grandis – Teak Tree

Tectona grandis, commonly known as the Teak Tree, is a large deciduous tree renowned for its high-quality hardwood. Native to South and Southeast Asia, teak is one of the most valued timbers in the world, prized for its durability, water resistance, and elegant golden-brown grain.

The tree can reach heights of up to 30–40 meters (100–130 feet) under optimal conditions. It has large, rough, ovate leaves and produces small, fragrant white flowers arranged in clusters. The leaves often fall during the dry season, and new growth appears with the rains.

Teak is widely cultivated in tropical regions for commercial timber production. The wood contains natural oils and silica that make it highly resistant to termites, rot, and weather, making it ideal for outdoor furniture, boat building, flooring, and luxury cabinetry.

  • Height: Up to 40 m (130 feet)
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 10–12
  • Light: Full sun
  • Water: Moderate – prefers seasonal rainfall
  • Uses: Timber, reforestation, ornamental in tropical gardens
More Information
Common name Teak
Family Lamiaceae
Genus Tectona
Species Tectona grandis
Germination To reduce bulk in storage, the seed can be husked by rubbing it over a sieve. Another method is to load seed and large river gravel into a cement mixer.

The seed can then be ?floated? off. Stumps, used for propagation, can be stored for up to a year. Seed storage behaviour is orthodox.

Viability can be maintained for at least 7 years in hermetic, air-dry storage at room temperature.
