Yucca filifera, commonly known as the "Spanish Bayonet," is a striking, evergreen plant native to the deserts of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. This species is part of the Agavaceae family and is prized for its tall, sword-like leaves and dramatic flower spikes, making it a popular ornamental plant in xeriscapes and arid gardens.
Typically growing to a height of 1.5 to 2.5 meters (5 to 8 feet), Yucca filifera features long, narrow, fibrous leaves that form a rosette at the base. These leaves are green or blue-green in color and have a distinctive thread-like filament running along their edges, which is where the plant gets its name. The plant's trunk is typically short but can develop over time, making it appear tree-like.
In late spring to summer, Yucca filifera produces tall, dramatic flower spikes that can reach up to 3 meters (10 feet) in height. The flowers are large, bell-shaped, and white or creamy, creating a beautiful contrast against the plant's dark foliage. These flowers are pollinated by nocturnal insects, such as moths, adding a unique ecological interaction to the garden.
This plant thrives in well-drained, sandy or rocky soils and prefers full sun exposure. It is highly drought-tolerant, once established, and is perfect for dry, low-water gardens. Yucca filifera is hardy in USDA zones 8-11 and can withstand heat and cold but should be protected from excessive moisture, as it is sensitive to root rot.
Yucca filifera is an excellent choice for desert-themed landscapes, rock gardens, or as a focal point in xeriscaping. Its bold appearance, low-maintenance care, and ability to thrive in dry conditions make it a standout plant for low-water gardens or as a striking addition to garden beds and containers.
Common name | St. Peter's Palm |

Species | Yucca filifera |
Germination | Sow the Yucca seeds in a gritty mix of peat, coco fiber, vermiculite and perlite, sand or similar media. Fill shallowly in trays or pots and sow the seeds on the surface. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, about as thick as the seeds are. Label with species name and date. Do not cover the mix with plastic or glass. Place the trays or pots at temperatures between 25 and 30øC (75 to 90øF) in a brightly lit spot but out of full sun and keep slightly damp but never wet. The seeds will sprout reliably after a few days or weeks. |
