Brugmansia Suaveolens White
Brugmansia suaveolens is a semi-woody shrub or small tree that gets 6-15 feet tall, usually with a many-branched single trunk. This Angel Trumpet occurs naturally in South-est Brazil. It is widely grown as an ornamental everywhere. It is a fast growing plant. Brugmansia may be grown in containers or in the garden. The overall plant has a coarse texture but the flowers are remarkably beautiful. They are exceptionally fragrant, about 12 inches long and shaped like trumpets. The corolla has five points that are slightly recurved. The flowers are usually white but may be yellowish; they are pendulous, hanging almost straight down. The large trumpet flowers bloom for most of the year. Container-grown plants moved indoors for the Winter may bloom during those months. The leaves are generally oval in shape, green, up to 10 inches long and 6 inches wide, and even larger when grown in the shade. It bears showy fruit, 4-6 inches long, somewhat rugose. Brugmansia are toxic, all parts of plant are poisonous if ingested. Hardiness zones 9-11, (-5øC/25øF, 4øC/40øF) in Winter. It will stand short frosts, but generally does best in areas where the temperature rarely drops below 32øF. Provide a minimum Winter temperature of 7øC and reduce watering over the Winter. In cold Winter areas, plants can be brought indoors. Brugmansia suaveolens likes rich, moist soil. Apply a balanced fertilizer bi-weekly or monthly during the growing season. Plant likes regular water, especially when growing. Brugmansia is a very robust and somewhat drought tolerant variety. For best results, provide a moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.

Germination Easy to grow from seed. Soak seed in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. Place seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Maintain an optimum temperature of 60-65øF (15-18øC). Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 14-30 days, sometimes more, don't give up. Germination is greatly assisted by applying bottom heat. It can flower the first year from seed.
Scarification / Stratification If your home is on the low side of 70§F, your seeds will benefit from bottom heat. Give warmth from underneath to stimulate early growth, and to help seeds to germinate. The ideal situation is to maintain the soil temperature at 70§F. For this, you use an electric soil warming cable kit, or a heating mat that goes under your flats; or any other source of heat. With the proper temperature, you will cut by 2 or 3 the germination time.
