Common name | Notocactus |

Species | Notocactus ssp |
Germination | To germinate the seeds, mix some river sand with regular potting soil and 1-3 mm grit (1:1:1). Make sure that the medium is very loose and airy. Sterilize some 1-3 mm grit to put on top of it. The grit should be boiled for 10-15 minutes. Fill the containers at 50% with the medium, slightly press it down, and now fill it up to about 1 cm under the edge of the container and add 0,5 mm of (sterilized) grit on top of it. Once filled, put them in a watertight tray filled with water. Seal the tray in a plastic bag or with a lid and let it soak up the water for about two hours. Take them out and let the excess water drip out, and fill the tops with grit. Slightly press the seeds in the grit and put the container in a clear bag with the opening facing upward, close the bag and place it at approximately 23øC under medium light conditions, no direct sun. Most seeds should germinate after about 14 days, but it varies. After germination, make 2-4 small holes to let the seedlings slowly adjust to dryer air, and 2-4 more holes each following week. After 2 months, remove the bag, and water the seedlings with warmish water, making sure not to let the medium go dry. Transplanting seedlings into fresh soil is needed when: the soil is completely dried out or the seedlings have no more room to grow or when a major infection has occurred. Use the same soil mix described earlier and they should be ok. As the seedlings grow try to increase the light intensity but be careful for burning because young cacti and succulents are very sensitive. |
