Tacca Integrifolia Nivea
Tacca nivea, better known as White Batflower or devil?s whiskers .The genus Tacca comes from the Taccaceae family and consists of long-lived, short stemmed, rhizomatous, or tuberous herbaceous plants. In the wild, it occurs in the understory of rain forests in deep shade. This plant is native to Asia. This plant is a real thought provoking plant for the home. This plant can grow up 3 feet high. This rare white form of the ever popular Bat Plant offers shiny, dark green leaves and in 2-3 years when mature, magnificent white, green veined blooms with long tentacles. Curious, bat-like inflorescence both in shape and color, with wide spreading, wing-like bracts of rich maroon-black, accompanied by long trailing filaments or "whiskers", and small black flowers. Heavy berries will replace the flowers. After the Tacca blooms, it will develop seedpods. These pods will remain on the plant for quite a long time. Once they dry out or fall, remove them and split them open to remove the seeds. Let the seeds dry only a few days. If a pod is accidentally knocked off, while it is still mushy, place it on a saucer and let the pod continue drying before opening it up to harvest the seeds. Regarding the difference between Tacca integrifolia and Tacca nivea: Nivea emerges with snow white bracts, which slowly age to have green veins. The foliage is a little lighter than integrifolia, and the leaf stems stay light green, even in high light. Hardiness zones: 10-11 (1øC/35øF, 4øC/40øF) in winter. Give the plants very little water through the winter and provide a temperature of 15-18øC (60-65øF). Summer temperature should be around 25-29øC (75-85øF). Re-pot in February/March if needed and keep them shaded from the sun. As with any tropical, give the occasional mist spray through the summer. For fertilizer use, Miracle Grow mixed 1/4 teaspoon to 1 gallon of water. Plant will take light frost down to 3øC (37øF). Repot every 2-3 years and remove decaying rhizome growth.

Germination Soak the seeds 24 hours in warm/hot water (hot enough that you can put your hand in). Use a thermos bottle to keep the water hot during this time. Sow in trays, pots, etc. using a good seed starting mix in a propagator or warm place to maintain optimum temperature of 27-29øC (80-85øF). It is essential that the soil temperature is high and kept steady. Sow 1.5mm (1/16in) deep in good moist seed compost and seal the container inside a polythene bag after sowing, and cover with plastic wrap to keep humidity. Do sprinkle a little bit of sphagnum moss on top to help retain moisture and mist daily with warm to room temperature water. Germination usually takes 8-12 weeks. Do not toss out your seedbeds thinking they will not germinate! Be patient!
