Therapeutic uses Lobelia Cardinalis is the best herb for bronchial spasms. The leaves and flowers have strong antispasmodic effects on the bronchial tubes when smoked at the first signs of spasms.
Germination This species requires or benefits from a three month period of cold-moist stratification in the refrigerator.

Sow on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 16-18C (61-64F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 14-21 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When lobelia plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in a sheltered position in sun or semi-shade on reliably moist, fertile soil. Lobelia Cardinalis copes well with boggy soils and can be planted at the edge of ponds and streams.
