Digitalis Purpurea Gloxiniiflora
Digitalis purpurea gloxiniiflora, the Giant Shirley, is native to Europe and considered a biennial, carefree and easy to grow. The Gloxiniiflora is a very sturdy variety of Foxglove. Il will grow to 3-5 feet tall.
The 2-3 inch long flowers are in shades of white, pink, salmon, yellow, cream and cerise, often dotted and make wonderful cut flowers. Foxglove begins blooming in Spring and blooms for 6 to 8 weeks. Leaves are produced in the first year, with tall spikes of flowers the second year.
Hardiness zones 4-10, (-32øC/-25øF, 1øC/35øF) in Winter. The Gloxiniiflora is one of the few flowering plants that flowers well in the shade and it will take some sun. The Foxglove requires a slightly acidic, sandy, well drained soil with quite a bit of organic material. It prefers to be moist.

| Germination | Easy to grow from seed started indoors a month before the last frost. Place seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Keep a temperature of 65-75øF. Light aids germination. The seeds should germination in 14-21 days, it can be more, don't give up. |
