Prunus Persica
Prunus persica or peach tree is from the Rosacea family. Native of China. A small bushy tree or large shrub. Grow it as an ornament and count the fruit a bonus. Also used as a Bonsai. This tree grows real fast and can reach 25? H and 15? W. The deciduous prunus persica dark grayish black bark is marked with prominent horizontal lenticels. The leaves are alternate, simple, and lanceolate, finely serrate, 3-6" leaves. The long narrow leaves hang somewhat pendulous providing an interesting effect. They are slightly folded along the midrib. The leaves turn only a poor yellow-green before dropping. As the stems age they turn grayish brown and have noticeable swellings at the end of each season's growth. White, pink, or red and single, semi-double or double, the 1 - 1 1/2" diameter showy flowers occur before leaves in mid April in central Illinois. Selections with variegated flowers also exist. The flowers on any peach can easily be injured by spring frosts or cold winter temperatures. They are especially susceptible to late winter or early spring warm periods followed by cold temperatures. The classic and delicious peach, the large drupes of this species are 2-3" in diameter, juicy, sweet tasting and pubescent. Their color ranges from yellow to peach or deep red, although they are not formed on double flowered cultivars. Hardiness zones: 5-9, (-26øC/-15øF, -5øC/25øF) in winter. The peach prefers full sun with acidic to neutral soils that are well-drained. Prune heavily after flowering to get the best flower production for next year. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. Average water needs; water regularly but do not over water.

Germination First, scarify the seeds. For faster germination, soak the seeds in slightly hot water for 24-48 hours, followed by 2-3 months cold stratification before sowing in your soil. Sow at 1 inch deep in moist soil. Lights aid germination. The seeds can be rather slow, sometimes taking 18 months to germinate.
Scarification / Stratification Seed coats may be so hard that they are impermeable to water. They need to be scratched or broken using a knife or sandpaper, in order to germinate. Chip the seeds with a sharp knife or make a few swipes with a sharp edged file or use sandpaper to allow moisture being more readily absorbed.
