Puya Chilensis
Puya chilensis, commonly known as the Chilean Puya, is a striking evergreen bromeliad known for its towering flower spikes and spiny, architectural foliage. This slow-growing plant can reach up to 2 meters tall (6.5 feet) with flower spikes that can extend up to 3 meters (10 feet). Its sharp, gray-green leaves form dense rosettes, while its vibrant yellow-green flowers bloom in tall clusters, attracting pollinators like hummingbirds. Native to Chile's arid regions, it thrives in well-drained soil and can withstand drought, making it ideal for xeriscaping or as a dramatic focal point in any garden.

Common name Chiliean Puya
Species Puya chilensis
Germination Puya chilensis is easy to germinate. Any small containers will do. For the soil use 2 parts high-quality potting soil and 2 parts perlite, and 1 part sand, mixed well. Fill each container to within 1/2" of the top with soil. Water them so they are moist, not wet. Place 1 seed on top, and sprinkle a very thin layer of soil on top - just enough to barely cover the seeds. Spray the top soil with a spray bottle. Put the container in a plastic bag, with some holes in it, to keep moisture. Place the pots in a spot that's about 65-70 degrees, under a fluorescent bulb, or in bright shade. The seeds should sprout within 4-6 weeks, although allow up to 12 weeks for any slow ones.
