Roridula Gorgonias
Roridula gorgonias is a very rare perennial that grows in a couple of costal mountain areas of Overberg region, Western Cape South Africa. It occurs in scattered colonies in damp places on the mountain. It is a woody, sparingly-branched shrub to 1 meter or more. The genus contains just two species, Roridula gorgonias and Roridula dentata. The narrow leaves, up to 120 mm long are crowded at the tips of the branches and are covered with sticky immovable tentacles. The pink flower are 20 mm across. In early Spring the plants usually starts to flower. The semi-carnivorous Roridula gorgonias appears to be a carnivorous plant, but in fact, does not digest trapped prey. Pameridea roridulae, which feeds on the trapped insects, defecates on Roridula leaves, and nitrogen is then absorbed through the leaf cuticle. Whether this plant is regarded as carnivorous or not is essentially a matter of taste. Hardiness zones 8-9, (-10øC/15øF,-5øC/25øF) in Winter. Roridulas don't have a dormancy but they are slowing down their rate of growth if days get shorter and temperature lower. Roridula gorgonias grows in soil that is more moist than Roridula dentata growing soil. During Winter the soil should be kept only moist. Both species like a lots of sun, and should be placed in full sun.
