Serenoa repens is the most common palm in the U.S. The leaf stems are about 2 ft (0.6 m) long and sharply saw-toothed hence its popular name: Saw Palmetto. It is a shrubby palm that grows up 5 to 10 feet, occasionally forming a trunk. The fruits are round, black when ripe and about an inch in diameter. Saw Palmetto resists from ?4 to 36 ø C (25 ? 97 ø F). Serenoa Repens grows best in dry, well-drained soils and warm-temperate, or humid-subtropical climates. It grows in part shade/part sun. Therapeutic uses The Indians used Serenoa repens fruit in order to treat cystitis, gonorrhea, prostatic hyperplasia as well as mucosal irritation.
Germination Fill a small container with room-temperature distilled water.

Place the seeds in the bottom of the container so that none of the seeds are touching (if possible) and that there is no more than one layer of seeds.

Remove the seeds from the water after 24 hours and plant them immediately.
