Fragaria vesca is also named Fragaria insularis, Potentilla vesca, Woodland strawberry, or Wild strawberry and is part of the Rosaceae family. The wild strawberry is found in northwestern California, Central-western California, Eastern North America, and also Europe. While you won't get a huge crop, they do fruit continuously throughout the growing season. They've even been nicknamed the "perpetual strawberry". This herbaceous plant isa low perennial that grows up to 0.3m, with scaly rhizome and long, slender trailing stolons, leaf stalks and flower stems greenish or very lightly tinged reddish purple, lightly to densely hairy. This plant will form a compact plant, about 10" high, with an 8" spread. The leaves arebasal, in compound with 3 leaflets, and each leaflet is ovate with straight, prominent veins and no individual leafstalks. They are somewhat pointed at the tip, with margins appearing roughly toothed with the terminal tooth protruding past the two adjacent lateral teeth. The leaves are thin with a petiole generally 3-12 cm. It is in flower from April to July, and the seeds ripen from May to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by bees, flies, Lepidoptera (Moths & Butterflies). The white flowers of about 18mm. have 5 petals, which are often 2-lobed, with numerous pistils, on stems that are 30-40 cm long (usually longer than the leaves). Sometimes the plant blooms again in the fall. Woodland strawberry is a perennial with a long fruiting period. Fruits can begin as early as June and can continue forming as late as the end of October. The fruit is a small, about 1cm, delicious, red berry with seeds distributed on the surface, unlike most fruit with pits; ripening in July. They are ideal for making jams and liquors. The berries are a good source of antioxidants and vitamin C. Hardiness zones : 3-9 (-37c/-35f, -5c/25f). Fragaria Vesca prefers a fertile, well-drained, moisture retentive soil in a sunny position. It tolerates semi-shade but its fruit production will be reduced. The plants spread rapidly by means of runners. Just be sure to cover your plants with netting or you are likely to lose the fruits to sneaky birds and rabbits. You'll fare better with soil that is rich in organic matter. The roots are very shallow and mulching will help keep them moist.
