Musa zebrina est connue pour ses feuilles colorées. Les feuilles sont vert foncé et tâchées de rouge sur le dessus, et d'un rouge vin en dessous, avec une nervure centrale brunâtre.
De part ses longues tiges, ses minces feuilles vertes, chacune de 1 m de long, et ses superbes fleurs d'un rouge vif, il est l'un des bananiers nain parmi les plus prisé.
