Le tronc est gris foncé et devient légèrement rainuré quand il mûrit. Les petites feuilles sont vertes foncées et brillantes. En automne, ses feuilles deviennent jaunes.
D. latifolia produit des grappes de fleurs jaune vif et marron. Les fleurs produisent du pollen, du nectar, de la nourriture pour divers insectes et oiseaux.
Avec ses teintes de jaune, écarlate à orangé brulé, le feuillage d'Automne de l'Érable à sucre est si fabuleux, qu'il devient à lui seul une attraction touristique.
L'écorce est gris argenté et son bois tendre est peu apprécié dans l’industrie. Le système de racines est peu profond et fibreux. Il s'étend en largeur beaucoup plus qu'en profondeur.
