Mammillaria elongata est une cactée avec une tige globulaire, plus rarement cylindrique, avec des structures en formes de tubercules qui soutiennent les aiguillons et donnent un aspect "pelote d'épingle".
Alors que les feuilles se déploient, les fleurs vertes s'ouvrent et révèlent une longue langue, ressemblant à un cordon, sortant de la bouche de la fleur et atteignant 30.5 cm et plus de long.
