Sauvage en Australie, il existe plus de 100 espèces différentes dans le genre Ptilotus. L'espèce exaltatus est l’une des plus répandues dans les endroits semi désertiques.
Du printemps à l’été, la vigne produit plusieurs fleurs fragrantes, de 12 cm de long, parmi les feuilles pendantes. Les fleurs attrapent les insectes, ce qui facilite la fécondation.
