Les Ferocactus sont cultivés pour leurs épines colorées et souvent en forme de crochets. Pendant leur jeune âge, ils sont souvent globuleux, mais avec l'âge ils deviennent plus allongés.
Du printemps à l’été, la vigne produit plusieurs fleurs fragrantes, de 12 cm de long, parmi les feuilles pendantes. Les fleurs attrapent les insectes, ce qui facilite la fécondation.
