Germination | Sundew requires temperatures between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit (7-18oC) to initiate germination. Seedlings typically emerge during the late fall or early winter; dormancy begins when temperatures are regularly around 78 degrees (25oC). Sometimes, conditions aren't right for seedlings to emerge the first year; but if you allow the seeds to dry out in a humid location during the summer, then move them to a cool place and begin watering them again in the fall, young plants should sprout. Dormancy is vital to sundew's survival; these plants may require up to eight months of dormancy each year. |
Scarification / Stratification | Sundew seeds require pre-treatment for best results. Scarification is highly recommended because the thick seed coats make it much more difficult for seedlings to emerge. Sandpaper with a 100 grit rubbed lightly over the seeds until the shiny outer coating is dull helps to thin the coat enough to improve germination rate. It may take more than a year for your seeds to germinate, so be patient after planting. |
