Germination | Fresh seeds germinate readily in sandy soil in the spring. When sowing inside use 4? pots , cut up newspaper pieces and put them in the bottom. Fill with a good medium soil. You can put 3 seeds in each. Place each 4" pot in a plastic container (the big clear ones - those that are used to store clothes). Fill the plastic container with water so that the whole bottom is filled. The water height it should be kept at; is up to the 1/2-way mark of the holes in the bottom of the 4" pots. The newspaper will soak up the water, keep the dirt & seeds wet w/o drowning the seeds, and you won't have to water the seeds overhead (which can often push the seeds further into the dirt and/or displace them). Re-full the water every 3 days or so, just wait for the bottom to be dry for 1 day and then re-fill to the original level. Place it in dappled shade, with the sun pieces being only in the morning. They should germinate in about one week. Wait until they have their 2nd set of real leaves, separate them, and put them each in their own pot. Remember that germination can take longer. Be patient! |
